Maudie (2016)

“Maudie” (Canada/Ireland, 2016, biography/romance, 115 minutes, PG-13)

Based on a true story about an unlikely romance in which reclusive fishmonger Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke) hires an arthritic yet determined Nova Scotian woman named Maudie (Sally Hawkins) as his housekeeper.

Bright-eyed but hunched with crippled hands, she yearns to be independent, to live away from her protective family and to create art. Unexpectedly, he finds himself falling in love.

The film charts Everett’s efforts to protect himself from being hurt, Maudie’s deep and abiding love for this difficult man and her surprising rise to fame as a folk painter.

The winner of several awards at various film festivals, including best film, screenplay, cinematography and audience choice.
